GES Bans Three Eastern Region SHS from Sports for Two Years Over Hooliganism

The Ghana Education Service has imposed a two-year ban on three senior high schools in the Eastern Region following acts of indiscipline recorded during the recent Regional Super Zonal Sports Competition.

In an official letter dated 11th February 2026 and signed by the Eastern Regional Director of Education, Mrs. Ivy Asantewa Owusu, the directive was issued to heads of second cycle schools in the region. The letter referenced incidents that occurred before, during and after the games, describing the behaviour of some students as unacceptable and contrary to established rules.

The affected schools are Koforidua Senior High Technical School, New Juaben Senior High School and New Nsutam Senior High Technical School. According to the Regional Education Directorate, students from these institutions were found engaging in acts described as hooliganism.

Management of the Eastern Regional Education Directorate together with the Regional Second Cycle Schools’ Sports Executives expressed strong displeasure over the disturbances. The statement cited provisions in the Ghana Education Service Code of Conduct, particularly section 2.17 on Physical and Psychological Violence, as well as Articles VII and VIII of the Eastern Region Schools and Colleges Sports Association Code of Discipline, which address disturbances, riots and sanctions.

As a result of the findings, the three schools have been banned from organizing, participating in or spectating all sporting and related activities for a period of two years. The ban covers activities at the school, zonal and regional levels. It extends beyond sports to include quizzes, debates, cadet activities and entertainment events. The sanction took effect on 11th February 2026.

In addition to the suspension, each school has been fined five hundred Ghana cedis. The institutions are also required to bear the cost of any damage to property or injury to individuals arising from the incidents. A committee will assess and determine the extent of the damage and the corresponding financial responsibility.

The Regional Director urged school authorities to ensure that students, staff, alumni and supporters comply strictly with the rules and regulations governing the Ghana Education Service and the regional sports association. She emphasized that adherence to discipline is essential to maintaining order and safeguarding the integrity of inter-school competitions.

Management has called for full cooperation from the affected schools to prevent further disciplinary action in the future.
