JUSMAnewshub -3rd August,2025

The School of Mathematics and Statistics at Maynooth University is inviting applications for a PhD Studentship beginning in October 2025. This opportunity is open to individuals with strong academic backgrounds who are eager to begin doctoral research. Join my WhatsApp group for more https://chat.whatsapp.com/IwYdwerq679JpLNCAQXatL
The selected PhD candidate will contribute to a project funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), titled Estimating and Projecting Population Exposure to Extreme Sea Levels in Ireland. This research is under the supervision of Professor Niamh Cahill.
The project integrates advanced techniques in demographic modeling and spatial analysis to assess the risks that rising and extreme sea levels pose to populations in Ireland’s coastal zones. It also seeks to understand internal relocation patterns among populations at risk, offering critical insights to help shape coastal planning, flood defense systems, and inland resettlement policies.
1. Refined Analysis of Population Exposure: Enhance and apply new methods to accurately estimate how sea-level changes and coastal flooding events impact populations at a micro-geographical scale. This includes taking into account regional demographic factors to improve resilience planning.
2. Climate-Driven Migration Insight: Investigate historical and projected patterns of migration within Ireland prompted by climate pressures, particularly from coastal risk zones, to anticipate and model population shifts under future extreme sea-level scenario’s
Scholarship Funding Details
This studentship offers full financial support over a 4-year period from October 2025 to September 2029. The support package includes:
Annual Living Allowance: €25,000 per year
Full Coverage of Tuition Fees
Annual Research Travel Support: €1,250 per year
The studentship is valid for four academic years, contingent on yearly progress reviews and satisfactory academic performance.
PhD Student Responsibilities
The doctoral candidate will undertake research aligned with the project’s objectives, including:
1. Mapping Coastal Population Estimates: Collect and analyze datasets to model population distributions in Ireland’s low-lying coastal areas vulnerable to flooding.
2. Modeling Risk Exposure to Sea-Level Extremes: Develop predictive tools and frameworks to assess both current and future exposure of these populations to extreme sea-level events.
3. Tracking and Predicting Relocation Patterns: Analyze movement trends from high-risk coastal regions, factoring in age, household structures, and other key demographics to predict likely inland destinations for those displaced.
