GES Releases Reopening Schedule for 2025/2026 Academic Year

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that all senior high schools nationwide will reopen in October for the start of the 2025/2026 academic year.

According to a circular issued on August 20, 2025, and signed by Mr. Prince C. Agyemang-Duah, Director of the Schools and Instructions Division, the new academic calendar will operate under a single-track and a modified double-track system, described as the transitional academic calendar.

The first term is scheduled to run until February 27, 2026, with a Christmas break from December 20, 2025, to January 4, 2026. The period between December 20 and 22 has been designated as a travel window for students heading home for the holidays.

The second term will commence on May 4, 2026, and end on August 21, 2026, bringing the academic year to a close. The 2026/2027 academic year is expected to begin on September 11, 2026.

GES explained that the newly introduced transitional calendars are designed to ensure consistency and effective management of the academic year across all second-cycle institutions. Regional directors have been instructed to make sure school heads strictly follow the approved schedule to maintain uniformity in teaching and learning activities nationwide.
