Two members of staff at Sefwi Bekwai STEM Senior High School in Awaso, located in the Western North Region, have been arrested by the police in connection with the suspected theft of food items intended for students of the school.

The suspects have been identified as Bennedicta Nyamadi, the school matron, and Rahel Kyeremateng, a cook at the institution. According to official sources, the arrests were carried out on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, after the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) received intelligence late the previous night regarding the alleged theft.

Acting swiftly on the information, a joint team made up of police officers, the area’s Member of Parliament, and the Municipal Chief Executive conducted a search at the residence of Rahel Kyeremateng in Sefwi Atronsu. During the operation, a large quantity of food items believed to have been taken from the school’s food store was reportedly discovered.

Items retrieved during the search included 21 bags of 50-kilogram rice, four sacks of gari, two sacks of maize, one and a half bags of millet, one bag of sugar, three bags of beans, 40 large tins of tomato paste, four cartons of milk, six gallons of cooking oil, and 54 tins of canned mackerel. Authorities say the total monetary value of the items is yet to be assessed.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that the two suspects allegedly worked together to remove the food supplies from the school’s storeroom. The items were reportedly kept at Kyeremateng’s residence, with the intention of selling them at a later time.

During initial questioning, Kyeremateng is said to have named Nyamadi as the source of the food items. This revelation led to the immediate arrest of the school matron at the school premises.

Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt for Hannah Dufie, an assistant matron who is believed to be connected to the incident and is currently on the run.

The Western North Regional Police Command has confirmed that investigations are ongoing and assured the public that all individuals found to be involved will be dealt with in accordance with the law. The incident has raised concerns about the management of school resources and the need to safeguard food supplies meant for students.
