From the provisional fee schedule released by the university, it is evident that the increments vary depending on the college and level of study. At the College of Humanities, for instance, Level 100 students are expected to pay GH¢3,110 for the upcoming academic year. This represents a sharp rise of about 34 percent compared to the GH¢2,319 charged in the 2024/2025 academic year. Continuing students in the same college will also experience an increase, with fees moving from GH¢1,777 to GH¢2,253, an increment of roughly 27 percent.

There is also a similar increases at the University of Ghana School of Law. Fresh undergraduate students under the College of Humanities will now pay GH¢3,226, up from GH¢2,435 the previous academic year. This amounts to a 33 percent increase. Continuing law students are not exempt, as their fees have risen from GH¢1,890 to GH¢2,396.

Beyond the Humanities and Law faculties, other colleges including Health Sciences, Basic and Applied Sciences, and Education have recorded fee hikes ranging between 25 and 35 percent. Many students and parents I spoke to say they were taken by surprise, as the changes were introduced without prior engagement or explanation from university management.

A closer look at the new structure reveals that third-party fees have increased significantly and appear to be a major factor driving the overall rise. These fees, which stood at GH¢255 last academic year, have jumped to GH¢767 for fresh students and GH¢455 for continuing students.

The breakdown includes levies such as GH¢300 for SRC Hostel Development, GH¢100 towards the university’s 75th Anniversary Legacy Project, SRC welfare dues of GH¢50, and reprographic charges of GH¢5. Fresh Level 100 and diploma students are also required to pay GH¢312 for a Telecel data package, while continuing students may opt into a monthly data and airtime package.

Students are now calling on the university’s leadership to clearly explain the reasons behind these increases, warning that the new fees could place additional financial pressure on families already struggling to cope with rising living costs.
