Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has lauded the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources for their inflexible commitment to combating illegal mining and safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources.
During a working visit to the Ministry, she emphasized that the battle against environmental degradation transcends ecological concerns, directly impacting the survival and well-being of present and future generations.
“The toughest assignment before this Ministry is to ensure that no child is born with deformities caused by chemicals—whether through contaminated drinking water or polluted air,” she stated, underscoring the human cost of inaction.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang stressed that government’s resolve to protect public health and the environment remains uncompromising, with significant investments in coordinated enforcement and stakeholder engagement.
She acknowledged progress in land reclamation and forest restoration, urging the Ministry to scale up efforts to reclaim degraded lands.
“The number of lands being reclaimed is difficult to imagine, but retrieving even a portion of them is an important success story. We want to encourage you to do even more,” she said.
Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah outlined key interventions, including the establishment of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Secretariat to harmonize law enforcement efforts. A five-pronged strategy focusing on stakeholder engagement, regulatory reforms, and alternative livelihoods underscores government’s commitment to responsible mining practices.
“Mining is the heartbeat of this country, but it must be done responsibly,” Mr. Buah emphasized.
