The Government has officially renamed Kotoka International Airport to its formal name, Accra International Airport

Goku Justice - 24th February 2026

The government has officially restored the country’s main airport to its former name, Accra International Airport, reversing its long-standing designation as Kotoka International Airport.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Transport, officials explained that the facility originally bore the name Accra International Airport before it was renamed. The Ministry said the decision to revert to the earlier and widely recognised name was considered appropriate under the circumstances.

The Ministry also clarified that the airport’s code, ACC, registered with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), has never changed and will remain in use.

As part of the transition, officials will undertake a phased update of all official records and materials. This includes statutory instruments, airport signage, digital platforms, aviation publications, and other communication channels connected to the facility.

Government has appealed to the public, industry stakeholders, and international partners to support the process to ensure a smooth and orderly transition.

The Ministry further thanked stakeholders for their cooperation and continued backing throughout the process.

Public discussion over the airport’s name gathered momentum in recent weeks after the Majority Leader announced on February 3 that legislation would be introduced to restore the airport’s original name. The proposal was presented as a step toward recognising the Ga people whose lands were acquired for the airport’s construction, while also addressing concerns about honouring a period associated with unconstitutional rule.

The proposed legislation sparked strong reactions across the political divide. Supporters, including Bongo MP Charles Bawaduah, argued that renaming the airport reinforces Ghana’s democratic values by ensuring that its principal gateway does not commemorate the overthrow of an elected administration.

Opposition voices, however, strongly criticised the move. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin described the decision as a slight against the Volta Region, the home area of General Kotoka. He accused senior figures from the National Democratic Congress in the region of standing by while what he called one of the few national symbols linked to their region was being removed.
