The Ghana Police Service has dismantled a notorious carjacking network operating in the Ashanti Region, following a series of coordinated intelligence-driven operations across Kumasi and nearby communities. The group, known as the “Duku Syndicate,” is believed to be behind multiple violent robberies, including the recent killing of Andrews Amankwa and identified suspects related to these crimes. Authorities are actively pursuing these suspects.
Addressing the media on February 23, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Arthur Osei Akoto, confirmed that the breakthrough came after a directive from the Inspector General of Police to intensify efforts against rising vehicle thefts and armed robberies. A joint task force comprising the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate, the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team, and the CID Anti-Armed Robbery Unit was deployed to track the suspects.
Authorities are keen to apprehend any remaining suspects to ensure community safety.
The police have stated their commitment to tackling crime and ensuring that any remaining suspects are arrested.

Between February 18 and 22, 2026, four principal members of the syndicate were apprehended in separate operations. One suspect, identified as the alleged ringleader, Eric Antwi Duku, sustained gunshot wounds during a late-night police action on February 22 and later died at a hospital. His body has been preserved for autopsy.
The first arrest occurred on February 18 when Akwasi Manu, 47, was found with a mobile phone belonging to the murdered victim, Mr. Amankwa. Subsequent arrests included Bashiru Tanko, also known as TK, 33, who was picked up in Atonsu and linked to previous vehicle smuggling activities in Tarkwa and around the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Investigators believe he did not participate in the fatal February 10 robbery due to internal disagreements over money.
On February 21, Kwadwo Amponsah, alias Kamakazi, was arrested near Buankra. His interrogation reportedly provided key intelligence tying the gang to several robberies involving Toyota Hilux vehicles in Kumasi. Later that same night, Emmanuel Kwame Appiah, also known as Taller, was arrested in Danyame and is suspected to have driven the gang during the deadly attack at Ohim Amanfrom.
Police investigations indicate the syndicate specialized in targeting Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser vehicles, often conducting surveillance before striking. In recent cases, they escalated to deadly force. The gang has been connected to multiple robberies across Tarkwa, Kumasi, and surrounding areas dating back to 2025, with several stolen vehicles allegedly transported through the Northern Border Corridor.
Items retrieved during the operations included a pistol with live ammunition, a tracking detection device, forged vehicle documents, and a Toyota Corolla believed to belong to the deceased suspect. The firearm is undergoing forensic testing to determine its link to other crimes.
Authorities say the suspects had previously evaded capture despite being wanted by the Central Regional Police Command. Investigations are ongoing to track additional accomplices involved in vehicle disposal and document forgery. The arrested suspects remain in custody and are expected to face prosecution, as police reaffirm their commitment to dismantling violent criminal networks in the region.
