An Open Letter to PRINCOF from Concerned Students of the Colleges of Education

JUSMAnewshub | 28th June,2025

We, the concerned students of the Colleges of Education, humbly submit this open letter to express our sincere concerns regarding the recent communication from your esteemed office, which announced a reduction in student meals to one hot meal per day. This directive, which took effect at the start of the current academic session, has caused considerable unease among the student body. In your statement, it was indicated that the feeding grant received per student stands at GH¢196 per month. However, this figure has prompted genuine questions from us, as it appears inconsistent with the current structure of student allowances. As outlined by government policy, each teacher trainee is entitled to a monthly allowance of GH¢400, of which GH¢200 is allocated specifically for feeding. Furthermore, following a collaborative agreement between PRINCOF and the Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG) in last two (2) academic years, an arrangement was reached to redirect a portion of this allowance toward enhancing the quality of meals provided to students. As a result of this agreement, students currently receive GH¢149 directly, with GH¢4 deducted as association dues, leaving GH¢247 designated for college-level use in catering services. In light of this arrangement, the declaration that only GH¢196 is received per student as the feeding grant raises a discrepancy of GH¢51 that remains unexplained. This gap, sustained over two academic years, represents a significant amount of funds for which we respectfully seek clarification. We trust that this inconsistency is not intentional, and we believe it may be the result of communication or administrative oversight. Nevertheless, we kindly request that PRINCOF, in collaboration with TTAG, provide a clear and transparent explanation regarding the actual amount received per student for feeding, as well as details concerning the allocation and utilization of the GH¢247 deducted monthly.

Moreover, considering the commitment made by students in good faith to support efforts aimed at improving meal standards, it is disheartening to witness a reduction in daily meals rather than the anticipated enhancement. We therefore appeal to your good office to revisit this decision, taking into account the nutritional and academic well-being of teacher trainees, and to communicate openly with students on the rationale and constraints involved.

Our intention is not to challenge authority, but to seek clarity, foster mutual understanding, and ensure the proper stewardship of resources meant for the welfare of students. We remain grateful for your continuous efforts in managing our colleges and are hopeful that this petition will be met with the same spirit of cooperation and transparency with which it is written.

Respectfully yours,
Concerned Students of the Colleges of Education
