PRESS RELEASE
TEIN PRESIDENT, KOMENDA COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
25th February 2025
APPEAL TO THE EDUCATION MINISTER TO INTERVENE IN* UNJUSTIFIED EXTENSION OF INTERNSHIP PERIOD
We, the final-year students of College of Education in Ghana currently undertaking our internship program, are deeply concerned about the recent decision by our college management to extend the internship period from late February 2025 to 17th April 2025. This abrupt extension, without any clear justification, has placed an immense financial and emotional burden on us, and we are calling on the Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, to urgently intervene. Join us on WhatsApp for more updates https://chat.whatsapp.com/HPfqFbuSt7fA2MVV742k2V
Our internship officially commenced on 15th November 2024, and as per the initial schedule, it was meant to last for three months. Before the Christmas break, we had already completed five weeks and resumed on 8th January 2025, expecting to finish by late February 2025. However, the sudden decision to extend the program to April 17th, allegedly due to the delayed supervision caused by a lecturers’ strike, is unreasonable. Our lecturers resumed two weeks after our return, meaning there was still ample time to complete the supervision within the remaining weeks of February.
This extension will cause severe financial hardship as many of us are responsible for our own feeding and accommodation. The additional cost of rent and living expenses is an unbearable strain on us, and we simply cannot afford to stay beyond the initially planned period.
We therefore appeal to the Minister of Education to urgently engage with the management of College of Education to reconsider this decision and bring the internship completion date back to at least 4th March 2025. We believe this is a fair compromise, allowing for the necessary supervision without imposing unnecessary financial distress on us.
We call on all stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and the general public to support our plea. The welfare of teacher trainees must be prioritized, and we cannot allow this unjust decision to disrupt our academic journey and well-being.
We await swift intervention on this pressing matter.
