Financial Clearance secured 13,500 unpaid Nurses and Midwives – Health minister

The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that the government has made notable progress in addressing the issue of unpaid salaries and allowances affecting health workers across the country.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Monday, October 13, the Minister disclosed that the Ministry of Health has obtained financial clearance for the payment of 17,909 nurses, midwives, and allied health interns who commenced their national service earlier in 2024. Mr. Akandoh further revealed that additional financial clearance has been approved by the Ministry of Finance for 13,500 nurses and midwives who were recruited and posted in the latter part of 2024. He explained that their previous clearance, which was set to expire on December 31, 2024, has been renewed to ensure that all outstanding payments are settled.

“Financial clearance has been secured for the payment of 17,909 nurses, midwives, and allied health interns who began their national service in early 2024. Similarly, clearance for 13,500 nurses and midwives recruited late last year has been renewed to facilitate their full payment,” he stated.

The Minister assured all affected personnel that the government remains dedicated to resolving inherited salary arrears and strengthening administrative systems to avoid similar issues in the future.

“As part of a broader effort to enhance Ghana’s health sector, the Ministry is implementing measures to safeguard the welfare of all health professionals,” he added.

Mr. Akandoh also appealed to health workers to remain patient and committed to their duties while directing any unresolved concerns through the appropriate channels for immediate attention.
