GRA Suspends Five Customs Officers Over Suspected Transit Cargo Breaches

Goku Justice - 25th February 2026

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has suspended five officers from its Customs Division following the detection of irregularities linked to a transit cargo operation involving goods en route to Niger.

The interdiction, announced in a statement issued on February 24, 2026, follows an enforcement exercise carried out on February 18, 2026. The officers have been relieved of their duties with immediate effect as investigations begin into the circumstances surrounding the operation.

According to the Authority, the consignment in question was officially declared as transit cargo intended for onward movement beyond Ghana’s borders. However, checks conducted during the operation revealed inconsistencies in the accompanying documentation, as well as suspected non-compliance with established transit cargo procedures. Management indicated that the nature of the findings raised sufficient concern to justify a detailed internal inquiry.

Transit trade remains a critical element of Ghana’s customs operations, given the country’s strategic position as a major trade corridor for landlocked states in the sub-region. Any breakdown in adherence to transit regulations, the GRA noted, poses risks not only to government revenue but also to the credibility of border control and enforcement mechanisms.

In addressing public concerns, the Authority stressed that the suspension of the officers is not a conclusion of guilt but a procedural step to allow for a fair and independent investigation. The GRA explained that the action forms part of broader measures to protect the integrity of the revenue system and ensure that customs processes are carried out in line with the law.

The statement reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to transparency, professionalism, and accountability in the discharge of its mandate. It added that safeguarding national revenue and supporting local industries remain central to its operations, particularly at a time when efficient revenue mobilisation is critical to economic stability.

Although specific details of the suspected breaches were not disclosed, the GRA confirmed that preliminary assessments suggest possible procedural violations that require closer examination. The investigation will seek to establish the full facts, including whether any officers acted outside approved customs protocols or facilitated lapses in enforcement.

The Authority further noted that the scope of the inquiry may be widened if necessary, and additional officers could be invited to support the process. At the conclusion of the investigation, the GRA said appropriate administrative measures would be applied in accordance with existing laws and regulations.

The GRA concluded by assuring stakeholders and the general public of its determination to uphold high standards in customs administration and maintain confidence in Ghana’s border enforcement systems.
