As of 25th April ,2025, Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, has established a committee to abolish the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) or incorporate it into the curriculum and it should be part of their final year exam . Instead, during his ministerial vetting on January 20, 2025, he indicated plans to review the GTLE and integrate it into the curriculum of Colleges of Education. This approach aims to allow teacher trainees to take the licensure exam on their campuses before completing their education, making the process more accessible and convenient. Previously, in July 2023, the Ministry of Education, under then-Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, constituted a seven-member committee to investigate the high failure rates in the GTLE. The committee was tasked with examining the alignment of the exam with national standards and recommending improvements to enhance the quality of teacher candidates .
While there have been political discussions about abolishing the GTLE, particularly from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, who described the exam as an affront to Colleges of Education , the current stance of the Ministry of Education under Haruna Iddrisu is to reform and integrate the licensure exam into teacher training programs, rather than abolishing it. Haruna Iddrisu set up the committee to decide whether to Abolish it and find other alternative to make teachers have their license or incorporate it into the curriculum. He also emphasized that, the committee should come out with a solution to those who failed the Licensure exam previously to have a resit or what should be the next thing to do help those people he added.
