His Excellency John Dramani Mahama Calls for Withdrawal of Bill to Scrap Office of Special Prosecutor

JUSMAnewshub -11th December 2025

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Majority Leader and the Majority Chief Whip in Parliament to withdraw a Private Member’s Bill that seeks to repeal the legislation establishing the Office of the Special Prosecutor.

The directive follows the President’s renewed public commitment to strengthening the Office rather than dismantling it. During a meeting with the National Peace Council on Wednesday, President Mahama emphasized that the institution remains a crucial pillar in Ghana’s anti-corruption framework. He noted that efforts to undermine or abolish the Office would contradict the broader national agenda of ensuring transparency and accountability in public life.

According to the President, the Office of the Special Prosecutor was created to enhance the fight against corruption by providing an independent mechanism to investigate and prosecute corruption-related offences. He stressed that while concerns have been raised over the years about the Office’s effectiveness, the appropriate response is reform not abolition.

President Mahama indicated that his administration is committed to strengthening the Office through improved resourcing, better internal systems, and renewed public engagement. He encouraged the leadership of the institution to step up efforts to build public trust, assuring that government will provide the necessary environment for the Office to succeed.

He further urged the Office to demonstrate greater visibility in its work by taking on high-profile cases decisively and transparently. According to the President, this will not only reassure the public but also reaffirm the Office’s relevance in Ghana’s governance structure.

The request for withdrawal of the repeal bill signals a clear shift in direction regarding the future of the Special Prosecutor’s Office. It also underscores the government’s intention to maintain the integrity of anti-corruption institutions while addressing gaps that have limited their effectiveness.
