I will not accept grade 37 into Category A school – Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu

JUSMAnewshub - 26th September,2025

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has stirred debate after making it clear that students with a grade of 37 will not be admitted into Category A schools. According to him, these schools represent the best of Ghana’s education system, and lowering standards would only dilute their quality.

The announcement has quickly sparked mixed reactions. Many parents and teachers agree with the minister, saying that top schools must remain competitive to reward students who perform well. They argue that keeping strict cut-off points motivates pupils to study harder and preserves the reputation of these elite schools. But not everyone is on board. Critics say the policy unfairly punishes students from rural and under-resourced schools, who often struggle due to poor facilities rather than lack of ability. For them, a rigid grade requirement only deepens the gap between privileged and disadvantaged students.

The debate goes beyond grades. It raises bigger questions about how to balance fairness with excellence in Ghana’s education system. While Iddrisu insists on protecting standards, others are calling for reforms that give more opportunities to students with potential, regardless of their background.
