According to the statement, the suspects were arrested on Friday, January 2, 2026, at Akwadum in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The individuals have been identified as Moses Tapiam, aged 43; Christopher Amakor, 29; Casimir Nunekpeku, 29; Wisdom Miwonku, 35; and Paul Agbahu, 53. Police said the suspects were wearing security-style uniforms and claimed they were operatives of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) based in Accra.
Investigations revealed that the group allegedly moved from one mining site to another within the Akwadum area, demanding money from miners while pretending to enforce anti-galamsey operations.
The suspects were intercepted and arrested by a genuine NAIMOS team while travelling in a Mitsubishi 4×4 pickup truck with registration number GS 536–25. After their arrest, they were handed over to the Eastern South Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Kibi to assist with further investigations.
