The National Teaching Council (NTC) has introduced major reforms to the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE), changing when, where, and how teacher trainees take the test. Previously, candidates had to wait a year after completing training to write the exam, but under the new system, the GTLE is now integrated into the final year examinations at teacher training institutions. In the past, candidates were not allowed to write in their own colleges, but the reform now allows them to take the test in familiar environments, reducing stress and travel costs. Another significant change is the introduction of a practical teaching component to the Pedagogy paper 30% of the score now comes from assessed teaching practice, with the remaining 70% from written tests. This shift ensures the exam measures both theoretical knowledge and real classroom skills, aiming to produce more competent, ready-to-teach graduates and improve the overall quality of education in Ghana.
