Three suspects have been arrested following the violent disturbances that disrupted the District Schools Athletics Games in Agona Swedru, according to the Central Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
The incident, which occurred on Thursday, 19 February 2026, left several students injured and sparked widespread concern across the region’s academic community.
According to JoyNews’ AM Show on Monday, 23 February 2026, the Central Regional Director of GES, Dr Juliette Dufie Otami, confirmed that security agencies had made significant progress in their investigations.
“As of yesterday, about three people have been arrested. We are still investigating the matter,” she said.
Although the identities of the suspects have not yet been disclosed, authorities say investigations are ongoing. Police are reviewing amateur video footage and gathering eyewitness accounts as part of efforts to identify and apprehend others believed to have been involved in the unrest.
In a development that has brought relief to families and school officials, all injured students have reportedly been treated and discharged from hospital.
Dr Dufie Otami assured the public that the medical emergency triggered by the violence had been fully addressed. Among those injured was a student from Obrachire Senior High Technical School ( OSTECH) who was reportedly the main target of the attack.
“They have been discharged and they are okay; they have all been treated, and they have all been brought back to the schools, and they are okay now,” she stated.
Accounts from individuals present at the athletics event suggest that tensions between rival student groups had been building throughout the day. The situation reportedly escalated during the track events, culminating in a physical confrontation.
The most alarming reports describe a targeted assault on a student from Obrachire Senior High Technical School. Witnesses allege that the student was surrounded by a group believed to be affiliated with Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS).
According to bystanders, the victim was pelted with stones and struck with wooden sticks before onlookers intervened to restore calm. Video footage circulating on social media shows a chaotic scene, with a visibly injured student at the centre of a large crowd.
As investigations continue, education authorities and security agencies are expected to review existing safety protocols to ensure that school competitions remain safe spaces for students.
The Central Regional Directorate has assured the public that those responsible will be held accountable as efforts continue to restore confidence in inter-school sporting activities.
