The heartbreaking incident occurred in the midst of activities designed to foster unity and school spirit among students. Sheriff, a dedicated law student, reportedly collapsed suddenly while participating in one of the competitions. He was pronounced dead shortly after.
Fellow students, faculty, and friends have been left stunned by the loss, describing him as a bright and committed young man with a promising future. The event has cast a dark shadow over what should have been a week of celebration.
The news was first shared by campus-based broadcaster Radio Universe on their official X (formerly Twitter) page. Confirmation soon followed from Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Edem Agbana, who expressed deep personal sorrow, noting that he knew Sheriff personally and regarded him highly.
In an official statement, the University of Ghana expressed its shock and extended condolences to the bereaved family, the Law Faculty, and the entire student body. The institution has also promised to offer psychological support services for students who may be affected by the incident.
This tragic loss serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of health safety protocols during athletic events. While enthusiasm and school spirit run high during such occasions, it’s vital to ensure that proper medical oversight is in place to prevent similar tragedies.
The LSU has temporarily suspended all remaining Week activities as students and staff come to terms with the loss. A candlelight vigil and memorial are reportedly being organized by students in Sheriff’s honor.
Sheriff’s legacy as a passionate student of the law and a beloved member of the campus community will not be forgotten.
