The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has announced the suspension of its nationwide strike, a decision that brings relief to students and parents alike. Academic work is expected to resume, giving room for dialogue between the association and relevant authorities.
While calling off the strike, UTAG reaffirmed its strong opposition to illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey. The group stressed that the environmental damage caused by galamsey threatens not only Ghana’s natural resources but also the future of education and research. With rivers polluted and communities affected, UTAG believes the fight against galamsey should remain a national priority. The association explained that universities play a crucial role in shaping sustainable development, and therefore cannot remain silent on practices that undermine the environment. UTAG urged government and stakeholders to intensify efforts to eliminate illegal mining and protect water bodies for generations to come.

Although classes will continue for now, UTAG made it clear that their stance on issues affecting education and the environment has not changed. The suspension of the strike is a pause for dialogue, not a withdrawal of their concern.
