Why Teachers from colleges of Education can’t teach in SHS after graduation

In Ghana, teachers with a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) in Basic Education from Colleges of Education are qualified to teach at the basic school level (Kindergarten to Junior High School). However, this qualification does not permit them to teach at the Senior High School (SHS) level. Join us on WhatsApp now https://chat.whatsapp.com/IwYdwerq679JpLNCAQXatL
To teach at the SHS level, a teacher must have a bachelor’s degree in a specific subject area relevant to SHS curricula, such as Mathematics, Science, English, or History. This degree should be obtained from a recognized university and is often accompanied by a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) or its equivalent if the initial degree is not in education. Additionally, passing the Teachers’ Licensure Examination is a requirement set by the National Teaching Council and the Ghana Education Service for teaching at the SHS level .
Therefore, while a B.Ed in Basic Education qualifies one to teach at the basic school level, it does not meet the criteria for teaching at the SHS level. Teachers aspiring to transition to SHS teaching positions must pursue further education in specialized subject areas and fulfill additional certification requirements.
