The short answer is yes but not for every program. Most diploma nursing programs in Ghana require at least a C6 in your core subjects (English, Maths, and Integrated Science) as well as your three electives. A D7 is not considered a credit pass, so it usually won’t meet the admission criteria for diploma-level courses.

However, this doesn’t mean the end of your nursing dream. If you have a D7 in one elective but meet the other requirements, you can still apply for certificate-level programs. Courses like Community Health Nursing or Health Assistant Clinical often accept D7s in elective subjects, depending on the institution. These programs are a great starting point and can lead to diploma upgrades in the future.

If you’re determined to go for a diploma, another option is to resit the subject you got a D7 in through the Nov/Dec WASSCE and aim for a better grade. This can boost your chances significantly. Many nurses in Ghana began their journey this way starting with a certificate, upgrading later, and building strong careers in healthcare.

So don’t give up. Whether you go through the certificate route or rewrite the paper, your dream of becoming a nurse is still within reach. Please share your comments and please share on other platforms.
